Did you know the air in your home could be silently harming you? Radon, an invisible and odorless gas, is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in Canada, yet many homeowners remain unaware of its presence. Lakelands Public Health is taking a proactive step by offering 750 free radon test kits to community members as part of the Evict Radon National Study. But here’s where it gets controversial: the Lakelands region isn’t necessarily a radon hotspot—it’s simply an area with insufficient data. This raises the question: How many other regions are flying under the radar?
Starting December 15, 2025, residents can pick up a test kit at designated locations, including local libraries, municipal offices, and the Lakelands Public Health office in Peterborough. Participants must agree to place the device in their home for at least 91 days and return it for analysis using the provided prepaid envelope. Why 91 days? Radon levels can fluctuate, and this timeframe ensures accurate results. And this is the part most people miss: even if your home is new or well-sealed, radon can still seep through tiny cracks in foundations, walls, or floors.
What exactly is radon? It’s a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the breakdown of uranium in soil and rocks. When inhaled, radon releases radioactive particles that damage lung tissue over time, increasing cancer risk. Dr. Thomas Piggott, Medical Officer of Health at Lakelands Public Health, emphasizes, “This study will help us understand local radon levels and work with municipalities to mitigate risks.” But here’s a thought-provoking question: If radon is so dangerous, why isn’t testing mandatory for all homes?
Test kits are limited to one per household and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents of Alderville First Nation, Curve Lake First Nation, or Hiawatha First Nation are encouraged to contact Lakelands Public Health for participation details. Can’t get a free kit?
