Gran Turismo 7's Active User Base Surpasses 2 Million, and It's Still Growing
In a recent interview at the Gran Turismo World Series 2025 World Finals in Fukuoka, Japan, series producer Kazunori Yamauchi revealed an impressive feat for Gran Turismo 7: it has over 2 million active monthly players, and the number is still rising. This revelation comes at a pivotal moment for the franchise, following the announcement that the Gran Turismo series has sold over 100 million copies worldwide.
"This is a very unique situation," Yamauchi stated. "Most titles see a decline in players over time, but Gran Turismo 7 has defied this industry norm. The game's momentum is unprecedented for Polyphony Digital and Sony."
What's even more remarkable is that this growth has occurred without resorting to the traditional "price drop" strategy used to revive older titles. Yamauchi attributes this success to the studio's evolving relationship with its community and a new approach to long-term support, which began with the update structure of Gran Turismo Sport.
The Power Pack and Spec III Updates
The surge in players is supported by a steady stream of significant content. The recent launch of the Power Pack DLC and the highly anticipated Spec III update have rejuvenated older players and attracted new ones. The Power Pack, in particular, introduced unique race formats and modified vehicles, enabling the team to take on "different challenges" they couldn't previously attempt.
A Global Esports Phenomenon
The series' esports presence is also expanding. Gran Turismo World Series events now reach around eight million people per event across global broadcast channels. With the franchise hitting the 100-million-unit milestone and GT7 potentially becoming the best-selling entry, the future looks bright.
This success could have interesting implications for Gran Turismo 8's development. With the game's 30th anniversary approaching, Polyphony Digital may want to do something special. However, will Sony Interactive Entertainment want to capitalize on this momentum? The question remains, and we invite you to share your thoughts in the comments.
