Imagine a life-changing decision, a leap of faith, and a journey to a new land. Arabella Carey Adolfsson's story is one of adventure, culture shock, and the pursuit of happiness. But little did she know, the quiet of Sweden would be a challenge she hadn't anticipated.
Arabella, a nature lover at heart, finds solace in the serene beauty of Sweden's lakeside landscapes. Fishing, photography, and the peaceful surroundings bring her joy. However, beneath this idyllic surface lies a tale of adjustment and the unexpected.
"Sweden is breathtaking," she shares, "from its pristine lakes to its clean air. Yet, the Swedish winters... they're something else!"
Beyond the natural wonders, Arabella appreciates the European proximity. She and her husband, Stefan, embark on travels to Copenhagen, Portugal, and Stockholm, embracing the freedom to explore. But here's where it gets controversial... the cost of this new life.
Nearly three years into her Swedish adventure, Arabella reflects on the sacrifices made. She and Stefan, a Mexican American with three children and grandchildren, had envisioned a split between Sweden, Mexico, and California. Their first attempt at Swedish life in Lund left Arabella homesick, but a serendipitous moment led them to Torpön, an island home.
"Torpön is remote, a true escape from civilization," Arabella reveals. "Days pass without seeing anyone but Stefan. It's a culture shock, especially for someone like me who thrives on human connection."
Back in San Diego, Arabella was surrounded by her extended family. The absence of this community has been a challenging adjustment. "A huge part of my life is missing," she confesses. "I'm still searching for a replacement."
Torpön, with its summer activities and winter solitude, presents a unique rhythm. Adolfsson and Stefan plan their mainland trips strategically, stocking up for the long, quiet winters. Adapting, she says, is a mental journey, a reprogramming of one's mindset.
"I've had to rewrite my internal script," Arabella explains. "It's about embracing a new way of life."
Arabella's new life involves European travels, from Slovenia to Mallorca, and creative pursuits like photography and writing. Video chats keep her connected to her US family, especially her adorable three-year-old grandson who "hugs the telephone."
Language and cultural differences pose challenges. Arabella, a Hispanic, finds the Swedish reserve a contrast to her expressive nature. "The lack of PDA is an adjustment," she says with a smile.
Despite the challenges, Arabella appreciates Sweden's lower cost of living, especially housing and healthcare. She misses the convenience of the US and good Mexican food, finding the 'finer things' elusive in Sweden.
"Change is harder as you age," Arabella observes. "I wish I'd known more about adapting before leaving the US. These skills are crucial in our globalized world."
Arabella plans to stay in Sweden, returning to San Diego periodically, hoping to persuade Stefan to return one day. Her advice? "Ensure a connection and understand the journey. It's not easy, but the memories are worth it."
And this is the part most people miss... the loneliness and the tough days. But, as Arabella says, "You'll create unforgettable memories." A powerful reminder that life's greatest adventures often come with unexpected twists.
