PM Albanese Faces Scrutiny: Should Politicians' Entitlements Be Reviewed? (2026)

PM distances himself from politician spending rules amid Anika Wells controversy

Anthony Albanese has rejected calls to revisit the rules governing taxpayer-funded entitlements for politicians amid intensified scrutiny.

Sports and Communications Minister Anika Wells has faced a wave of questions over the past two weeks regarding the appropriateness of some of her expense claims, including flights for family members to attend sporting events and a trip to a ski resort in Thredbo.

Ms Wells has referred herself to the expenses watchdog for an audit but insists her spending complies with the rules. The same defense has been used by minister Don Farrell and Nationals MP Andrew Willcox, both of whom frequently utilize family entitlements.

Speaking on 2GB on Thursday, Opposition Leader Sussan Ley—who resigned from the cabinet during the Turnbull era after questions about her own expenses—said she was “always open to looking at the rules.”

Yet standing beside Ms Wells in a high school library on Thursday, Mr Albanese dismissed calls to revise the rules, stating he was focused on delivering the social media ban. “These are rules that have been set for some period of time. They’re rules that are in place,” he said. “We haven’t added to any entitlements. The rules have been there since they were put in place by the former government.”

When asked whether expectations should be tightened, Mr Albanese said he did not want to “influence that from the top” and would defer to the independent parliamentary expenses authority. That watchdog oversees compliance with the rules and can make recommendations during audits, but the rules themselves are established by regulation and administered by the finance minister and the special minister of state.

Pressed on whether he favored changing the rules, Mr Albanese said he was “not the finance minister” and noted his government had “not changed the rules.”

The Albanese government has not increased entitlements but has amended rules in some ways, including updates to the definitions of parliamentary and official business by Special Minister of State Don Farrell, among other changes.

Asked whether the rules meet community expectations, Mr Albanese acknowledged that those expectations matter. “Every now and again what we see is issues arise … I’m aware that this is an issue,” he said.

Coalition pressure for Wells to recuse herself from inquiry

The Coalition has intensified its critique of Ms Wells by questioning whether her actions breach the ministerial code of conduct. Sussan Ley urged the minister to “step aside” while the prime minister’s department reviews the matter.

The guidelines require ministers to avoid wasteful or extravagant use of public resources and to ensure “due economy.”

Liberal finance spokesperson James Paterson argued that Ms Wells had breached these requirements and accused the prime minister of failing to hold his ministers to account. “This has rapidly become a scandal about the prime minister and his judgment and the standards he’s willing to enforce on his ministers,” Paterson said.

While echoing his leader’s openness to reassessing the rules to align with community expectations, Paterson warned that focusing on the rules could be a distraction and emphasized that the core issue is Ms Wells’ judgment and conduct.
