The NHL trade rumor mill is heating up, and one deal in particular has fans on the edge of their seats. The Vancouver Canucks, seemingly open to making moves, are reportedly in serious discussions with the New York Islanders. But here's the twist: while much of what the Canucks have to offer isn't exactly turning heads, one veteran player is suddenly in the spotlight.
On Tuesday, insiders Rick Dhaliwal from CHEK and Stefen Rosner of The Hockey News dropped a bombshell: trade talks between the Islanders and Canucks are intensifying. And this is the part most people miss: the focus appears to be on Conor Garland, though Rosner hinted it could involve more than just him. "We'll see how this plays out," Rosner tweeted, leaving fans guessing.
Adding fuel to the fire, the Islanders' assistant general manager, Ryan Bowness, was spotted at the Canucks' game against the Dallas Stars on Monday night. Why send such a high-ranking official to scout? Could it be a sign of deeper interest in Garland, who once played alongside Islanders' star center Bo Horvat? Or is there more to the story?
Rosner also revealed that the Islanders have their eyes on Drew O’Connor, the Canucks' leading goal scorer. But here's where it gets controversial: while New York's need for offensive firepower is clear—they rank 20th in goals scored despite a stellar defensive record—acquiring Garland or O’Connor wouldn't come cheap. Garland carries a $4.95 million cap hit this season, rising to $6 million next year, and holds a full no-movement clause for three seasons. Is he worth the investment?
To complicate matters, Rosner suggested Tyler Myers could be part of the deal. But here's the catch: unless a player like Anthony Duclair (currently out of favor with Islanders coach Patrick Roy) is included in return, this part of the trade could get messy. The Islanders have just over $6 million in cap space, so fitting Garland in would be tight, especially with Myers' $3 million salary and O’Connor's $2.5 million contract through 2027.
While Garland, Myers, and O’Connor aren't exactly first-round pick material, this is the part most people miss: the Islanders hold two first-round picks in this year's draft (their own and Colorado's), giving them flexibility to make a splash. But the question remains: are the Canucks offering enough to entice the Islanders, or will this deal fizzle out?
